that its demolition would in any case be unavoidable in the

near future.

6.

The Club desires to build a new Club house

at an estimated cost of $20,000 and I enclose a copy of a letter dated 16th January last from the President of the

Club applying for Government assistance. I am of opinion that the cause is one which justifies a moderate expenditure of Government funds and I shall be glad if I may receive Your Lordship's approval for the inclusion in the Estimates

for 1931 of a sum of $10,000 as a contribution towards the

provision of a new Club house, on the understanding that

Goverment will not contribute more than one half of the

total cost involved up to such a maximum.

7.

The Unofficial Members of Legislative Council

have been consulted informally on this matter and are in

agreement with the above proposal.

8.

I may add that the Police Recreation Club,

which is a separate institution, was in 1919 provided with

a new pavilion at a cost of $5,000 the whole of which was

borne by Goverment. I can find no evidence that this

expenditure was specially submitted to your predecessor for

approval.

I have the honour to be.

My Lord,

Your Lordship's most obedient,

humble servant,

Wo. d. Southoth

Officer Administering the Government.
